The road less travelled (because I've had no car)

Posted by on April 2, 2011

I haven’t posted here in over a month. Man, it really is something that I have gotten away from. Oh well. I’ve got a few tales to tell today and I have a few minutes to spare so I’m doing a bit of writing.

My car…Oh what a wonderful piece of crap it really is. The car stopped running probably about a month ago. I went to go move the car one night and it started, was running, and then just stopped. After finally being able to get someone to take a look at it, I learned the timing belt had gone.

I took it to Brian’s Transmission which is literally just up the street from here. After 4 days of being told me car would be ready that day, I finally got it back. Problem now was that they told me the power steering pump would need to be replaced soon. I learned that even more so after a day or two of driving when I had no power steering. Thankfully, the adding of ps fluid helped in the short term but there was a leak so it didn’t last long.

Took that car back and they had it for 2+ days before they decide to tell me that they can’t do the work because the pump is behind the A/C unit which they can’t remove because they aren’t licensed to do that and the guy they get to do that is off work for a week. So, I took my car back, had it for close to two weeks then returned it to Brian’s again on a Monday morning. They told me it would be ready at the end of the day. It wasn’t.

Turns out they needed a special screwdriver to put the pump on so they were going to borrow one from another shop the next day. Next day comes and no car. They couldn’t borrow one so they ordered one and it would arrive the next day. The next day comes, the screwdriver doesn’t fit. They decide to return it and the pump and get a new pump that doesn’t need the screwdriver. They got the pump installed on Thursday but the guy who does the A/C stuff wouldn’t be available til Friday so I would have to get it then.

Friday came and I finally got my car. The price they quoted me was $600 and I paid $520 for the changes. If you ask me, I should have pushed my luck for a bigger discount but the owner wasn’t there and I wanted my damn car back. So now, it’s finally running and I am ok for now.

But it doesn’t end there. My windshield has a huge crack across the entire surface so I need it replaced. That’s $100 since insurance will cover it. But, I also need my summer tires put on and I only have 2 which means I need to buy 2 more. That’ll run me another $200.

If I could work my budget the right way, I’d sell this car in a heartbeat and try to lease something new. I am so sick of having to put out money on this junkheap but right now that’s what I am stuck with.

Anyone wanna buy a 2004 Chevy Aveo hatchback?
