A New York Minute

Posted by on June 14, 2004

So it’s lunchtime so I need to kill some time while I wait for 2:45 to come and I can go to my eye appointment and have my day end. Knowing how it will go there I will likely sit there and wait and wait since I want it over and done with. Who knows, maybe I’ll have enough time to go back to work. Wouldn’t THAT be fun?! Oh well, it’s better than a kick in the nads. But for now, I’m going to find a bunch of useless crap to yap about.

Surprisingly enough, in 45 days, or something like that, I’ll be on my way to New York City again. What is it about that city that fascinates me so much? I’ve pretty much been there almost every year since 96 and I haven’t been able to figure out why. It’s weird.

But this trip will be different. Not only will Tamara being going with me for the first time, but hopefully her best friend and her husband will be coming along with us. The word isn’t final yet and they may need to back out but I am really hoping they can come with us as I think it will be a pretty cool trip if the four of us are together.

What will be the same and different this time? Everytime I go, I always try to bring people with me that have never been there before. So typically, you see all of the regular stuff. Grand Central Station, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Times Square, etc. All of the big ones. Tamara isn’t sure what she’d like to see and I’ve seen a lot there so we’ll just have to try and wing it. Even just walking around is a lot of fun. But, this time will be much different in how we get into the city. See, traditionally, I stay outside the city and take the train. But if we’re in Croton-Harmon, it costs $7 each way to go into the city. That works out to about $40 Canadian for two round trip tickets (Saturday & Sunday) which is per person. So for 4 people to go into the city for 2 days, it costs $160 which is horrible. BUT, if we drive into the city, and park there, it’s prolly like $25/day for parking. So say a bit for gas and $50 for two days is a hell of a lot cheaper than $160. Plus the $50 gets split 4 ways so it ends up being like a little over $12 per person, instead of $40 and that’s a huge savings.

So, it will be interesting to see how much fun it will be driving in the city. I have done it before and I’m not afraid to drive in downtown NYC, just a little leary of it. I know I’ll be fine it’s just the passengers that will need to try and stay calm as NYC drivers are pretty crazy. That’ll actually be kind of fun.

Tamara says she wants to see Chinatown as she has heard it’s pretty neat and that is one area of the city I have never been in. I think that would be cool too. I also think it would be pretty cool to go down to the village and check out some of the neat shops. But our time will be limited to two days so we have to pick our attractions carefully. I may make the suggestion of one of the hop-on/hop-off tours which go all day and that way we could really see a lot of the city. It’s something I have never done but I think you can cover more territory that way. When I went to Los Angeles I took one of those cheezy bus tours and it was worth it. The price is a bit steep but it can be worth it in the end.

There’s so much to do in a city that large and I know myself, I’d like to see NBC studios as I have never had the chance to go in there. I’ve been down past that part a dozen times and even had the chance to go, but circumstances prevented that from happening. Maybe this time will be a bit different.

I really hope that it’s nice that weekend as we are supposed to camp out. Camping is a cheap way to stay down there since hotels are so damn expensive and realistically, camping is a lot more fun. If it rais, we’ll prolly have to do the motel thing which will hurt the pocketbook but for myself, I don’t usually buy souvenirs. I just take a shitload of pictures and videotape so that I have real memories to look back on. It’s very cool.

One thing I would really like to see is a big time movie being shot. I’ve never had the chance to see that. I’m really interested in that kind of thing and it would be very cool to sit back and watch people you have seen on the big screen shoot a big time movie that hits the theatres. Who knows. It would be cool though.

If time permits, I might even take Tamara up to where I used to work & live. Kind of a nice trip down memory lane but that will all depend on how tired we are and what the timetable is like. Who knows.

Anyway, I’m done ranting for now. I’m going to go do something useful. Bye bye!
