As a former delivery driver for Greco, I learned some techniques for getting money out of customers for tips. I tried my best to use loonies and toonies instead of $5 bills. If your bill came to $14.50 and I hand you a $5 you’ll likely tell me to keep the change. Whoopie! 50 cents. But if I hand you a bunch of change, you’ll likely give me at least a dollar, or if you’re in a good mood, hand me all the change. Other things like jingling the change in the fanny pack worked wonders too. Makes people want to get rid of you faster so they tip you bigger to get you out of their home.
Anyways, the above article talks about techniques used by waiters/waitresses. I dunno about the smiley face one but if a waitress touches me, I can see how it might get them a bigger tip. Hell, if she got under the table she’d get a hell of a tip 😉
