So I gtook the box from downstairs and brought it upstairs for a quick exam. No real removable screws but after doing a bit of digging, I did find a diagnostic mode I could put the box into to give a bit of info and discovered that indeed the drive is an IDE device at 80GB.
Plugged the RJ45 cable into my router and it did very little. Nothing. Zip.
Did find a link online though that describes basically how to sample the data off the device so that you can record via the firewire ports. Might try that some other time but at least I have tried now. :/
