It's true. I have quit drinking Coke… for now.

I posted a status update in Facebook about me quitting drinking Coke and I have had a few comments here and there and folks at work have been wondering what’s up.

Well, in case you didn’t know, I drink a lot of Coke. By a lot, I’d say probably between 5-6 cans a day. I have been drinking it for a long time and I decided that I want to perform a little experiment on myself.

I want to see if once I get through the shock and withdrawal symptoms (should make my weekend quite miserable) how I feel. I have been feeling awful tired lately and I have started to notice more and more that after I drink the Coke, I feel fine but then I “come down” from the sugar high and I seem to get sleepy. Well, that may seem obvious to most but for myself, I have been drinking the stuff for so long it just sort of seemed like the way I was.

Regardless, I want to see how it affects my health. So I am trying to replace the Coke with water or juice. I have been drinking a lot of water today and we’ll see how it goes over the weekend. Ultimately, I am trying to insure that I am living a little more healthy than I have before.

Now, I could very easily have started slowly and then eventually come off, but I am more of the do it and get it over with type. So the plan is to hopefully be Coke free for a few months and see how it affects my health.

I have made one exception to this rule. Saturday lunches. Every Saturday I go up to Kent’s and have a sausage from the sausage vendor guy up there. I’ve been going there for years and intend to continue. I’ll continue to order my sausage and a Coke but that will be the only source of caffeine I’ll be taking in. I do not consider it a cheat since at 6 cans a day down to one a week is quite a feat.

I will say that I had a bitch of a headache at lunch but thanks to some water and Advil, it is not as bad as it was, although it is still sitting there. I expect to have it most of the weekend.
