Copyright reform hit's Canadians

Well folks, it finally happened. The whole issue of people being sued for downloading music and moves has finally come to Canada. Sort of.

Today the Canadian government amended the current copyright law here in Canada and apparently it is all over the press. I read one article and it really looks like people are having a shit fit over it.

There’s a good website that a colleague of mine provided to me which details out exactly what the proposed bill amendment covers.

Basically, if you download music or movies illegally, they can fine you up to $500. That’s not $500 per infringement, that’s $500 total. However, if you are caught sharing/uploading music/movies illegally, you can be fined upwards of $20,000.

I have not read all of the details yet, but the things I have read actually didn’t seem that bad and ultimately, this type of copyright reform was bound to happen eventually. I don’t think it’s going to stop many people from downloading much, but it is interesting to see this finally hit Canada.

End result? Don’t upload/share your music or moves when online. If you get caught downloading, $500 is not bad compared to 20K.
