Crooked Creek, 2008

Posted by on July 13, 2008

I gotta tell you, I had a blast yesterday. In fact, I think everyone did.

Earlier in the week I had made the suggestion to Tamara that we take another spin down to Crooked Creek. We had not been there in awhile and there were a few caches in the area so we could go see the falls, and snag a cache or so. She invited Darren, Valerie, and Byron to come and yesterday around 11:30, we made our way down to Riverside-Albert.

The hike in was not bad and the bugs were not too bad either. In fact, it was all pretty good.

When we got to the falls, there were some folks already there but we made our way down to the water and did a little poking around. The water was a little cool but I went in for a swim, Tamara & Valerie got their feet wet, and Byron sort of poked a bit. Darren also jumped in and enjoyed a little swim.

It was quite nice there but the water was a little cold, but once you got used to it, it wasn’t bad. Valerie wanted to take a walk downstream so we decided to go find the cache that was only about 100m away from where we were. Me and Darren went to look for it and it was up this bigass hill that we had to climb. We eventually made it up there but there GPS accuracy was crap (20m range) but with a little luck, I found it under a tree and then we followed the trail down stream to see if we could find a better view of the water.

We found a few good spots but we eventually came to one area that was high above the water, but there was slope that was definitely traversable so I went down and took a look. I was actually looking to find a place to hide a cache. Eventually, the rest of the group climbed down the hill and we sort of stayed in that little area for awhile.

AWESOME little spot where the water was a little warmer (sun hit it much better than up stream) and it wasn’t too deep, and there was even a spot where you could make your way to where you could sit in the falls. Nothing too major but I kept referring to it as nature’s whirlpool. Very cool.

We did a pile of swimming, took a bunch of photos, and just thoroughly enjoyed the spot. There was no one else in the area and it was nice to sort of have our own little spot where no one else was around.

Eventually, we packed up and made our way back. We did notice when we passed the original falls that the groups of folks that were there were still there and one of them had a gun across his lap. Kinda weird but at least they didn’t shoot us.

Total round trip was about 4km by foot but believe me, you’d never know it. Had a blast and I am glad Val, Darren & Byron came. Hope they had as much fun as we did and hopefully, we’ll be back there soon.
