So today I started my first official day as an employee of Oracle Canada. The days of Whitehill and Skywire and now past me and I move forward wth new opportunities that may arise as a result of now working for the world’s largest enterprise software company. With that being said, I can’t help but think of this as a sort of second chance.
Back in 1999, I was hired by IBM to program for them at ne of their large plants down in the US. I enjoyed my job a great deal and as luck would have it, I did quite wel at it. I was set to renew my contract for another year, and there was the possibility of being transferred to the Canadian office to help bring them up to sped on the project I was a part of. It looked as if I would have a very promising career at IBM. However, life intervened and I ended up back in Moncton.
I won’t say that I regret that, but I will say that it took my career into a completely different direction. As a result of that, I never got to see what could have happened working for a company like IBM.
Now, here I am, eight and a half years later after leaving IBM, I’m now working for Oracle. In the top three software companies of the world, you have Microsoft, IBM, and then Oracle. In some respects, it feels very much like I have another shot at working for one of these large companies and seeing where it will take me. The advantage this time is that I’m already in my hometown, and my personal life is a hell of a lot healthier now than it was 8 years ago. I really see this as a huge opportunity and have been taking big stps to make sure it doesn’t get wasted.
Some people worry about how their jobs will change and how things wll be different and ya, things do change and things will be different but you have to look at the big picture. Think about what lies ahead for you and what could be behind the next door. It really is quite exciting.
