Sick, internet, moose, insurance woes & my return to Moncton

Posted by on October 6, 2008

Folks, I made it back from Allentown, and amazingly enough, not only were all my flights on time, I actually made it back to Toronto early and had a chance to actually relax before sleeping and getting up for the next morning.

Few things about Allentown… first up, it was bigger than I thought. Very spread out but I find a lot of those communities are like that. I found what appeared to be a large amusement park which I thought might be a 6 Flags but turned out to be just a local park. It’s not open the next time I am in town (this time next week) but I will go by and take some photos. I also did some caching although not a lot of it. Was not interested in finding micro’s in trees but I did find a few caches and I did manage to bump into 2 deer. Snapped a couple of pix on my phone which I will post eventually.

It took me a total of about 10 hours of being home before I git stuck with Tamara’s cold. She and Dylan (among others in the family) have been sick and sure enough, it hit me with a bang. Saturday it started, Sunday it was nasty, and today it has gotten better but it’s moved from my sinus cavity into my chest where it is setting off my asthma, which in turn makes me use my puffer more often, which then leads to mild shakes from a little excessive ventilin. Oh well. I’d rather be able to breathe.

Yesterday, Tamara and I took Dylan for a Sunday drive and ended up in Sackville. After taking some weird long ass road we saw down the road what I thought was a person. When we got closer, we noticed that it was not a person, but rather a huge frakki’n moose. I mean this guy was huge. We were a little spooked as we didn’t want him to charge the car but we backed off a little and he eventually went back into the woods. Not soon after, we decided that the dirt road we took was just too much to continue on so we backtracked our way back to sanity, and then home.

We received our self-install kit from Aliant today. We are officially switching to Aliant for internet service. Quite frankly, Rogers has been ok, but we’re slowly weening ourselves off them. I don’t like how they installed spyware on my machine, and throttle torrent traffic, along with the lame MPAA violation notice I got earlier this year for downloading Transformers. I saw the movie twice, and bought the DVD, but apparently I’m a nasty pirate by downloading the movie. Uhm, ya. Plus, we get SO much snail-mail from them in the form of advertising that it’s almost to the point of harassment. At least once, if not more than that, per week, we get advertisements for more cable service, internet, but particularly phone service. No, I do not want to switch. Stop sending me your junk mail. It really is annoying.

Aliant offered us a deal that made it cheaper in the short term, and the same in the long term, and I am fine with the fact that our speed will be a little less since I don’t download a lot of stuff anyway. Not a big deal. Now mind you, I had to reset the DSL modem twice today, and today is the day I installed it so if this continues, you can rest assured I’ll switch back without question.

I received a cheque from Blue Cross today meant to pay that bill I have down in the US. Only problem is that it’s a “discounted” cheque which I have no idea what that really means. I guess they get a discount with that hospital? That’s all fine and dandy but does that mean I’m stuck paying for the rest of the services? Need to call them tomorrow and find out.

I’m back on the road next Monday, which is a holiday, then I’m back on Friday, home Saturday, and then I fly out on Sunday for St. Louis. That will be a long trip as it will be from Sunday afternoon until the following Saturday morning. Pretty much a full week. I haven’t had a long trip like that in awhile. Plus, it’s for legal not insurance so I have to dress a bit spiffier. I’ll likely have to bring my ties.  Oh well. Maybe they have a good sense of humour and I can wear my “funny” ties. I don’t get to wear those very often.

Looks like this has been a decent post. When things are as busy as they have been, it’s hard to find time to write, let along write anything useful. At least I have something to say this time.

Oh Ken, btw, the iPhone is working great and I have only had it crash once. It didn’t like me trying to load www.tshirthell.com. Can’t say I blame it. Lots of nasty stuff there 🙂
