History in the making

Although this is not much of a rant, I filed it under rants since this is a bit more out of my topic range than normal.

Today, big things are happening in the United States. They are voting for a new president today and many people around the world are paying very close attention to this election. I’m not one who follows politics in a major sense, but with the way things have gone for the US in the last 8 years, tonite’s election is a pivotal one for them. Either way, whether it’s McCain or Obama that wins, history will be made.

If Obama wins (here’s to hoping), he will become the US’s first black president. His vision for the future of the US is a bright one, and a positive one, but with a lot of racism still active in the US, he has a hard fight against him in the coming months.

If McCain wins, he’ll be the oldest first run president in history, and his running mate Palin will become the first ever female vice-president. McCain has been pegged as another Bush so if he does in fact come to power, it will be very interesting to see what he does to fix up that country from the mess they are already in. Hopefully he can do something better than just keep fighting more wars.

How does this affect us as Canadians? Well, like all US activities, we see it in how our money goes up and down based on their economy. We see it in how our own politicians either cave in or stand tall against some of the awful US policies. We are heavily influenced by the US but not to the point where we ourselves are the same as they are. Personally, I think we’ll see Canada stay pretty much the same as it always has. The world knows what to expect from us and what kind of people live here. They also know that regardless of what US president is elected tonite, the US will always be viewed as a nation that probably could use some massive change, or at least an attitude adjustment.
