Well, let me tell you about the interesting events that transpired this weekend. Some of this really should go on Dylan’s blog but I’m going to post it here anyway.
As you know, we are expecting another baby in our household. In fact, she’s due to arrive in early-mid May. Well, that having been said, the fact is that we don’t have a room for her. So, we have had to make some adjustments in our house. Mainly, I’m losing my computer room.
We had decided that it was in Dylan’s best interest to get him moved into the computer room, his new room, sooner rather than later so that when M… oh wait, I can’t say her name yet, baby K arrives, she can move into Dylan’s old room. We didn’t want Dylan to have to deal with a new room plus a new baby sister all at the same time. Just too much change so we figured we’d move him early.
To do that though, meant we had to empty out my old computer room and move some things around. That was what went down on Saturday. A full day of moving, trashing, sorting, and dis-assembling (my desk) took the better part of a whole day. At the end of it, there was only a few boxes, and some wires spread out in that room.
Now, I re-hooked up the internet so Tamara could get her work for email, and I could still surf aimlessly. However, I hit a huge panic last night when I tried to hook up our shared drive. See, we have this silver box which is a network drive that we keep all of our music and photos on. I also keep a lot of “backup” *snicker* software on there. Well, I went to plug it in last night, and it would not work. The panic started setting in. 20,000 photos gone. 3000+ tunes gone. I tinker and tinkered and then finally, for some reason, it just spontaneously started working again. At that moment, I grabbed Tamara’s backup drive, my laptop, and started making a backup.
Of course, Windows backup is about as useful a navel lint, so that failed. I ultimately went with Nero’s backup software which is currently STILL running this morning, but at least it is working. The last thing in the world I want is to lose all of those photos and other stuff. We do have a couple of extra backups of the photos in various places, but this will be the most current backup. I might even do another one of just the photos tonite. I am NOT going to lose that stuff.
All of that having been said, I think it may be time to look into a new drive. A scare like that certainly makes you re-think about how you store your digital life.
