Friday couldn't have come any faster

It has been one of those weeks folks. The world of my work lately has been so hectic and crazy that when I get home and finally get to bed, my head is still racing with thoughts and things for work. I really do feel like it’s been all work and no play this week. Although it’s not true, I think it feels that way because of how much stuff has been going on in my work life. Peaks and valleys and right now I’m on Mount Everest. I like being busy because it makes the days go by faster but there are some days where it just seems to fill your head so much that you can’t get rid of it when you get home. Thankfully, the weekend is here.

Now, I need to rant a little bit about media so here we go.

I have to say, I’m getting quite sick and tired of American Idol. That show is everywhere. Everytime I turn around I see stories about it on the web, I see it on for like 2 hours in my TV guide for like 2 days or something stupid. It’s everywhere and quite frankly, it’s freaking annoying. This is a show that just won’t die. They are now on their 8th season and let’s face it, have they produced much in 8 years? Out of the 8 winners, there are really only 2 that went anywhere. Kelly Clarkson who won the first season, and Carrie Underwood who won the fourth season.  Beyond that, do you remember anyone else from that show? Have any of them gone on to make successful good careers? Maybe. This being the 8th year do you think we’ll see someone who lasts? I doubt it. It’s all about making a show that people watch, and watch, and then try to push on the American Idol tour which people might go see, and then it falls off again. Please oh God please make this be the last season so I don’t ever have to see that name anywhere again.

And speaking of beating us over the head with items from the media, WTF is the deal with Twilight? First off, I have to admit, I can’t stand anything that has anything to do with vampires. Whether it’s stories, movies, tv shows, whatever. If it has vampires in it, it pretty much sucks to me. The whole Dracula thing, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc. Never been into that stuff and I doubt I ever will be. So, like 6 months ago there started to be all of this press about this vampire movie called Twilight, and there were ads and commercials and it seemed like it was everywhere. Then the movie came out and there’s reviews and countless magazine and websites covered with Twilight stuff, and then just as the movie finally dies down a bit, now I’m being harassed daily by advertisements for the damn DVD. SERIOUSLY! I really am getting sick and tired of being bombarded by media that is trying SO hard to shove stuff into my face.

The last piece on my rant about media and commercialization has to do with the 12,000 commercials that aired during Lost and the 27,000 commercials that air during other television programs. It seems that now, if you manage to get 7-10 minutes of pure uninterrupted television, you’re lucky. Everytime I turn around, there’s another commercial and it breaks the sort of spell of the show. You get right into something within the program, and then it gets cut off by commercials. Thankfully, I can watch the show again the next day online or download the TV show, and the commercials are either removed, or reduced to 15 seconds tops. THAT I can handle. But what makes it even worse is the lesser viewed channels that air programming that you watch, that gets cut even further because the channels need more ad revenue to stay afloat. I was watching Friends on the W channel the other night. There were several instances where less than 5 minutes of the show had aired, and a commercial was coming on. The commercials last about FIVE minutes. FIVE minutes! Do you know how long that is when you’re watching something on TV? That’s a LONG freaking commercial. And WTF is the deal with a show being interrupted by a commercial at 10:54, running the ads for 3 minutes, then showing another 2-3 minutes of the show. It’s going to get to the point where there’s nothing to watch anymore but commercials.

All of that being said, I would gladly pay an additional fee on my cable bill if it meant there were less commercials. Would you?
