Welcome to the family, Robert Cain

Posted by on August 5, 2005

Well folks, I have some major news that I have been sitting on for a few months and since the cat is now officially out of the bag, and mom has done her thing, I?m putting it up on here for my friends to know. I now have a new brother.

Technically, he?s a half-brother, but still a brother. Several months ago, mom informed me about a child she had had as a youngin, and gave up for adoption. Recently, she had been contacted by the province of New Brunswick as her son, that she had given up, was looking to find his birth mother. Today, my mom met Robert Cain, and his wife, at their home for the first time.

Mom just left here and gave me the news and was quite happy. He is doing very well and is in fact quite a nice guy. The weird part is, I?ve known this guy for about 4 and a half years, never having any idea that he was in fact my brother.

Robert Cain was one of the shop floor supervisors that I worked with at Norampac Moncton. I saw this guy almost daily, talked to him, worked with him, had meetings with him, joked with him, and knew him, at least at work, quite well. I even knew that he lived just up the street as I had talked to him about the house me and Tamara bought and he had said he loved the neighborhood.

Mom had said she received a letter from him, indicating his name, and where he lived. At first, it didn?t ring a bell, but when I thought about it, especially about the address given, I realized who it was.

Can you imagine the odds of this? Having known someone for more than 4 years and having no idea that they are in fact your brother? The odds of this are astronomical. I told mom, if I hadn?t heard it from her mouth, I would have thought the whole thing was some sort of absurd practical joke. It?s very surreal to find this kind of thing out, but mom met him and his wife today, and apparently all went very, very well.

So, I doubt he will see this page, but in the chance that he does, I welcome him to our family. From what mom says, she is still unsure as to whether or not he wants to be an active member in our family or not, but either way is fine. We respect his decision to either partake in our family?s insanity, or to just learn a bit about us, and go on with his life. I can?t even imagine what must be going through his head, but regardless, I hope all is good with him.

Mom invited him and his wife to the cottage next weekend so if they should come visit, I?ll be making a trip down there to meet the brother, as odd as that sounds, and really make this whole thing real. I told mom tonite when she came to visit that I didn?t think the whole thing would really be real to me until I met with him myself, as his brother. Man, it just floors me how weird this whole thing is. Robert?s wife said it best, this is an Oprah story. Think we could get on her show?

Anyways folks, that?s my big, huge, news for the night. I have some work I need to do even though I am not really in the mood but I?ll do it anyway. Please feel free to comment on the insanity that is this scenario. I still am totally in disbelief. Very odd.
