Some of you may have questions about how this whole “snapshots” event will work. Here’s some Q&A to hopefully help you out.
When and where does the event start & end?
The event officially starts at 1pm at Bore Park on Main St in Moncton. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes (if not earlier) to register. The “race” itself ends at 4pm. The finish line is located at the Moncton Masonic Club at 115 Queen St in Moncton.
Is there a fee to participate?
Unlike the Race for Cache from previous years, there is no fee to participate in this race. Donations to offset the cost of the room used at the finish line will be accepted but are not required.
Will the event be cancelled if it rains?
No it will not. The race goes on rain or shine.
What does the race consist of?
Teams will be given a “snapshot sheet” which contains a list of 20 photos to be taken. The photos are broken into two categories:
- Core Photos (8)
- These photos are relatively easy to capture as they require you to go to a specific monument, or some other location that is easy to find.
- These are the only photos needed to capture the “First to Finish” (FTF) prize. The first team to cross the finish line with these eight photos will win the FTF prize.
- Additional Photos (12)
- These photos may be more difficult to get as they refer to items/places/things that are less common or straightforward. The points scored with these photos count towards winning the “highest score” prize
How are teams scored?
Teams score points in several ways.
- Points for Photos
- Every photo listed on the snapshot sheet is worth a certain amount of points. For each photo taken that is on the list, you will be given the associated point credit.
- Points for Instagram
- Any team that shares at least half of their photos on Instagram using our race hashtag (#mr4snap) will receive a bonus 5,000 points
- Points for Creativity
- Players/teams who are creative with their photos will be awarded bonus points. Photos that showcase how you’re having fun, being silly, or that make us laugh can earn you up to 2,000 extra points.
- Points for Time
- Teams start with 12,000 points. For every 15 minutes of the race, 1,000 points are deducted from their score. After three hours, all of the original points will be gone. Therefore, the faster you complete all of the photos, the more points you will keep.
What are the prizes?
There are two prizes for this race.
- FTF – First to Finish – This is a prize awarded to the team/player that crosses the finish line first, with all eight core photos taken.
- Highest Score – This prize is awarded to the team/player that has the highest score from all their photos taken.
Do I have to be a geocacher to attend / play?
No you do not. Unlike my previous “Race for Cache” event, no GPS is required for this event. You will not need to find geocaches or participate in geocaching to do this race.
If you are a geocacher, the race itself is a geocaching event. The code is GC8K0BF.
Will there be food or drink available at the finish line?
The finish line is at the Moncton Masonic Club. Both food and drink (licensed) will be available for purchase.
Is this a “family friendly” event?
Yes. All ages are invited to participate.
Where did you get the idea for this?
For several years, I did a geocaching “Race for Cache” event that was inspired by a combination of The Amazing Race and how I proposed to my wife. During my race events, we had an extra section for scoring points called “Snapshots”. Along with players going from stop to stop, they had to try and capture photos of various items. This event was spun off from that.
A geocacher by the name of Treehugger21 from Fredericton actually held two events also inspired by the race’s snapshots.
