My Halifax caching trip

It’s been a few days since I did any amount of posting on here so I thought I would share with you the latest of my adventures.

A few weeks ago, I decided that since I had never done any geocaching in Nova Scotia, why not take a trip there and get some caches in? Well, I booked a hotel (through Prceline.Com and it was actually cheap and decent) and decided to take last Friday off and spend the whole weekend in Halifax caching it up. Let me tell you, it was an interesting few days.

Friday I didn’t get as many caches in as I would have liked. I ended up snagging 20 for the day but I did manage to get one very important cache. Canada’s very first cache. This one was located near Chester, NS. It wasn’t too hard to find and was a nice sized ammo container. I also got my first webcam cache. That’s a cache where you go to a specific spot where there is a live webcam and get the snapshot of you live on the webcam. Thanks to my iPhone, I snapped the photo myself. Very cool. Once I was done there, I headed to Halifax where I found my hotel, and vegged for the remainder of the night.

Saturday, I got up and started at 8:30. Within an hour, I had 10 caches down but when I hit downtown, it slowed big time. Talk about a LOT of fences and misleading caches. Very irritating. Once I got back into the car and started driving around a bit, I picked up a bunch more and made a nice total of 38 for the day. That’s a personal best for caches done in a single day by myself. My all time best is 43 but Alex was with me. If there had been more light out, I would have continued caching but since I didn’t know the area well, once it got dark, I stopped caching.

Sunday came along and really, I was still tired. I got up and checked out of the hotel, and was on a mission. I needed 13 more caches to hit my 700 finds milestone and since I was really focused on that, I just went for whatever I could so that once I hit 700, I’d head home. I hit a LOT of bad caches this morning and had a lot of bad luck not finding many. Eventually I got what I needed but was one short. Tired, I decided to head back to Moncton anyway and I’d find one along the way to snag as #700. Sure enough, an Irving gas station and Stirlings apple store later, I hit 700. The rest of the trip was driving home.

It was real nice getting away by myself for a few days. The focus on caching was good too as I really got to see some interesting caches and interesting places. I must say that I still prefer caches in this area since a lot of things in Halifax sucked. Many of the caches are incorrectly marked/labelled/categorized and some are actually specific to a person’s size. There were 2 caches I could not get because I was short. The cache descriptions themselves said you had to be tall but they were not listed with a higher than normal difficulty so I was really irritated by that. I may have to start carrying a 5 gal bucket in the car so if I need something to stand on, I have it.

All in all, not a bad trip. I’ll have to see about doing another one to another city for another round of caching. My goal is to hit 1000 finds before summer hits so I better get my ass in gear 🙂
