The things you hear at 3am

Not sure if I have mentioned this previously, but I always have a hell of a time sleeping when I travel for work. This trip has been no exception. I have not had much luck in getting a good night’s sleep. However, last night, despite being woke up, I got a good chuckle. Here’s the story…

I finished watching LOST (which was awesome btw) and decided to watch part of The Forgotten since I recognized one of the guest stars from LOST on the show in the previews. About halfway into the show I started falling asleep so I turned the TV off and went to bed. I must have fallen asleep quite quickly but around 2:50AM I woke up.

Unsure of why, I quickly realized that I must have been woken up by the odd “thumping” noise. I kept hearing this “thump thump thump thump” and then it would pause for a moment. The thumps were about a half second or so apart but they always seemed to stop just for a few seconds, and then they would continue again for another 5-10 seconds and then pause again.

After waking up a bit more, I realized that the “thumping” was coming directly from behind my head. The thumping then started again but this time the time between each “thump” was shorter. The same pause seemed to happen but the thumps were definitely getting closer together. It was around this time that I pretty much had figured out the “thumping” was coming from the room directly beside mine. I’m guessing the bed in the other room was directly behind where the bed is in my room. It became very apparent to me that the “thumping” noise I was hearing was not a thump, but a hump.

Shortly after this realization, the “thumping” sound started to get a little louder, and was definitely getting closer and closer together. It was also at this time when I started to hear another sound. Now, I was not able to make out any words, but there were various “exclamations” that were made that were very hard to hear at first, but then they got very loud right around the same time the “thumping” sound seemed to have the shortest pauses I had heard yet. The only thing I could tell from the “exclamations” were that they were definitely coming from a woman’s voice.

In what I can only describe as more of a “yelp”, the “thumping” and the “exclamations” came to a stop and did not continue again.

I smiled, chuckled to myself, turned to my pillow, and went back to bed. Having been woken up at almost 3am in the morning, this will likely be the only highlight of this trip. I’m glad I start my journey home tomorrow.
